Bhutan SDF: Sustainable Development Fee Explained
The Bhutan SDF, also called the Sustainable Development Fee, plays an important role in Bhutan’s tourism policy. This fee helps the country protect its environment, preserve its culture and support responsible development.
Bhutan follows a “High Value, Low Impact” tourism model. Because of this, visitors enjoy a meaningful journey while helping Bhutan protect its natural beauty and unique way of life.
At Experience Bhutan Travel, we explain the SDF clearly before your trip. We also help you understand how the fee affects your total Bhutan travel cost.
Current SDF for International Visitors
International visitors pay a Bhutan SDF of USD 100 per person per night.
Children aged 6 to 12 years receive a 50% discount. Therefore, they pay USD 50 per person per night.
Children aged 5 years and below pay no SDF.
SDF for Indian Nationals
Indian nationals pay INR 1,200 per person per night.
In addition, children aged 6 to 12 years usually receive a 50% discount. Children aged 5 years and below pay no SDF.
However, SDF rates can change when the Royal Government of Bhutan updates its tourism policy. Therefore, travelers should always confirm the latest rate before booking.
What Does the SDF Support?
The Bhutan SDF helps the country invest in long-term development. Most importantly, it allows tourism to benefit the whole nation, not only the travel industry.
Your SDF contribution supports:
Environmental conservation and forest protection
Cultural heritage preservation
Free healthcare services
Free education for Bhutanese citizens
Sustainable tourism infrastructure
Community welfare and rural development
As a result, every visitor contributes to Bhutan’s people, culture and environment.
What Is Not Included in the SDF?
The SDF is a government fee. It does not cover hotel accommodation, meals, guide services, transport, entrance fees or personal expenses.
At Experience Bhutan Travel, we show all required costs clearly in your tour quotation. This helps you understand your full Bhutan travel cost before you confirm your trip.
How Visitors Pay the SDF
Travelers pay the SDF before entering Bhutan. Usually, the payment takes place during the visa or permit process.
Visitors can pay through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. They can also use the official visa application system when applicable.
When you book with Experience Bhutan Travel, we guide you through the full process. In addition, we provide clear payment details and proper documentation for your records.
Why the Bhutan SDF Matters
